Journey
Music, for Rorisang Sechele, is a practice in which structure and expression work together. A South African vocalist, songwriter, and creative director, she builds her sound through jazz while drawing from soul, African musical traditions, and orchestral fusion. Her work is shaped by formal training and a steadily expanding role in large-scale musical production.
Her musical foundation began in Pretoria, where church music, jazz recordings, and communal singing shaped her early ear for sound. She first entered structured training through the Jacaranda Children’s Choir, developing discipline in ensemble performance. At Pro Arte Alphen Park, she received classical vocal training and completed her studies with distinction, strengthening her technical and interpretive control.
Her studies in Jazz and Popular Music at the Tshwane University of Technology, where she graduated cum laude with an Advanced Diploma, marked an important stage in her development, equipping her with the technical and creative tools that would later shape her work as a performer and collaborator.
In 2021, she was selected for the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band under Dr Nduduzo Makhathini. This marked her entry into a national professional jazz platform and established her within South Africa’s formal jazz ecosystem. She went on to perform with artists including Lisette Spinnler, Nthabiseng Motsepe, and Zenzi Makeba-Lee. Her collaborative scope expanded through The Anchored Quartet under Ofentse Pitse, where she performed alongside Sun-El Musician, Simmy, Msaki, and Ami Faku. These projects placed her in orchestral and crossover environments that demand precision, adaptability, and vocal control.
A major independent milestone came through Digital Mobility Fund 5, supported by SAMRO and the Norwegian Embassy, which funded a sold-out Jazz in Jozi performance with her band. This marked her transition into project leadership and independently executed live production.
In 2024, she performed at Red Bull Symphonic alongside Kabza de Small and Ofentse Pitse in a full orchestral fusion production. In 2025, she returned in a leadership role as Vocal Music Director, responsible for vocal arrangements and choral direction. This shift marked a clear progression from performer to creative director within large-scale orchestral work. She also participated in the 2023 Youth Expressions Festival at the South African State Theatre and the 2024 State Theatre Incubator Programme. She was runner-up in the Fine Music Radio Fund Competition and featured in the Castle Milk Stout music experience, strengthening her presence in South Africa’s professional music circuit.
Her debut project, "In Full Bloom–The Seed" (2025), introduced a structured artistic cycle focused on growth and transformation. The project gained recognition in jazz and neo-soul spaces, including placement on Jazz NXT and nominations at the 2025 Urban Music Awards, Mzantsi Jazz Awards, and Basadi in Music Awards.
Beyond performance, she leads African Orchid Productions, a platform focused on vocal arrangement and musical direction. Through this work, she develops collaborative structures for ensemble performance and creative production. Across her career, Rorisang Sechele has moved from formal training into national jazz platforms, orchestral collaborations, and musical direction. Her trajectory reflects a steady expansion from performer to builder and director of sound within contemporary African music spaces.
